Commitments of Coalition
BOIS Québec Members

The decision makers of each member of Coalition BOIS Québec must agree

to take concrete action in the areas below, which will support the principles

and objectives set out in the Coalition’s Charter. The results stemming from

this action must be measurable.

Communications

Members shall use communication means available to them to raise awareness and inform their employees, clients, suppliers and the general public about the economic, environmental and social advantages of using wood, along with the commitments made for this purpose by Coalition members. This could be measured, for instance, by the number of public things written or done regarding this topic.

Training

Members shall develop training activities for their employees so they become familiar with all benefits stemming from the use of wood. Such training could also be offered to clients and suppliers. This could be measured by the number of training session participants.

Market and competitiveness

Members shall adopt purchase policies that take into account an increased use of wood products in a perspective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fighting climate change. These policies may also consider the life cycle analysis of materials in order to choose those having the least impact on the environment. Policies should also promote the use of wood that is certified according to an internationally recognized forest management standard.

Such policies should also state that, for acquisitions, new constructions, expansions and renovations, a minimum percentage of wood per unit of surface area be used. Lastly, they may, whenever and wherever possible, require that wood be considered for load-bearing and non-load-bearing frames, and also for finishing and decorative elements. The concrete impact of such policies could be measured by the increase in the use of wood compared with that of past projects.

Research and innovation

Members shall invest in research and development activities focused on wood products, namely as substitutes for energy-consuming and polluting products, and in innovative building solutions. This could be measured, for instance, by the amount of money invested or additional volumes or areas occupied by wood products.

Standardization and regulations

Members shall agree to define and, whenever and wherever possible, to amend any standards, rules or guidelines that directly or indirectly limit or restrict the use of wood products. This could be measured by the number of amendments made.
